About Museum Amersfoort
Museum Amersfoort is situated in the heart of the historic city centre, within three typical Amersfoort ‘muurhuizen’ (wall houses). This is where art, history, stories from the city and people come together. We show how Amersfoort’s stories are linked to current cultural and social themes, and invite you to take a fresh look at the city, at one another and at the world around you.

A city full of stories
In the permanent exhibition ‘Amorfortia’, visitors journey from prehistory to the present day and discover the stories of the people who shape the city. From pilgrims and artists to craftspeople, innovators and residents of past and present. The changing art and heritage exhibitions highlight contemporary themes and personal stories that resonate with the city. Children will find fun surprises and activities in the exhibitions. Armed with the inspiration they’ve gained, young and old alike can get stuck into activities and workshops in the Maak Mee Atelier.

How it began
The history of Museum Amersfoort dates back to 1870, when curious members of the Flehite Antiquarian Society (OVF) began collecting stories and artefacts from the city. To this day, the OVF remains committed to preserving the city’s heritage. That curiosity still lies at the heart of the museum. We believe that a city is more than just buildings and streets. It is the people, memories and experiences that together give the city its character.

Together with Amersfoort
Together, we bring Amersfoort’s stories to life
You’ll find Amersfoort’s stories not only in our museum, but all over the city.
That’s why we love working with residents, artists, heritage organisations, cultural
institutions, associations, schools and other partners. Together, we bring stories to
life that move, surprise and connect. We look beyond our own collection and
the museum’s walls, because it is precisely these different perspectives that give a richer picture of the city.
In this way, we make Museum Amersfoort a place of and for Amersfoort.
Coming together in Amersfoort
In our cosy museum café, visitors to the city and local Amersfoort residents are warmly welcome to come together – even if they aren’t visiting the exhibitions in the museum that day. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our unique view of the Koppelpoort, so bringing your own lunch or ordering from our ‘Pay What You Want’ menu are both options. This way, everyone can pull up a chair at the large tables to take a break or enjoy a cup of coffee and a good chat.
