About Museum Amersfoort

At Museum Amersfoort, we bring art, history and the city together. From our unique ‘wall houses’, we tell stories that will make you see Amersfoort in a new light – stories about the past, the present and the future.

Collection story – A place that didn’t exist.jpg

Through art and heritage, we bring residents and visitors together. We show how Amersfoort’s stories are linked to current cultural and social themes, and invite you to take a fresh look at the city and the world around you.

Here, you’ll discover how art, history and the city are interconnected. You’ll observe, get involved, discover something new, enjoy a coffee together in the museum café or wander through centuries-old half-timbered houses. Whether you’re here to deepen your understanding, find inspiration or simply enjoy a lovely visit to the city: there’s always something to discover, experience and enjoy here.

Three wall houses full of stories

Museum Amersfoort is situated on the remains of the old city wall, within the late-medieval walled houses. From this unique location, we tell the city’s stories. We do this through our permanent exhibition, Amorfortia, and through changing art exhibitions that are always linked to the city.

How it began

The history of Museum Amersfoort dates back to 1870, when curious members of the Flehite Antiquarian Society began collecting stories and artefacts from the city. That curiosity still lies at the heart of the museum. We believe that a city is more than just buildings and streets. It is the people, memories and experiences that together bring the city to life.

Museum café and terrace

Do visit our terrace

During your visit, you can also relax in the museum café and on our lovely terrace – with a view of the Koppelpoort – to enjoy the atmosphere, a special encounter, a good chat and, of course, a bite to eat and a drink.

We aim to be a meeting place where everyone is welcome; in our café, you pay what you can afford, so that the museum remains accessible to everyone.
