“I hope people realise that a city is never finished. That, after visiting the museum, they’ll start to see the city in a different light.”

Opening a new exhibition is always a celebration, but also nerve-wracking: how will it be received? That is why we are especially proud of the review that de Volkskrant wrote about our exhibition Carla Kogelman: A Closer Look.
“"She (Carla Kogelman) waits patiently until her presence is no longer noticed, and can catch the full life of a child in the act… with precious results." — de Volkskrant (★★★★)”
‘Museum Flehite is presenting Kogelman’s first retrospective in her home town of Amersfoort, under the title A Closer Look. As well as her powerful black-and-white photography, what is particularly striking is the depth to which she penetrates the world of children’s experiences. She knows how to reveal their true nature through the camera, even before it gradually disappears behind the mask of adulthood and its associated conventions.’
Carla Kogelman: A Closer Look is a major retrospective exhibition of her work. The photographs capture vulnerable and pure moments in life. They explore growing up, identity and, at times, the inevitability of parting.
The exhibition offers space for joy, grief, playfulness, sport and cheerfulness: an overview of life itself, of both children and adults, told through photography.
The exhibition runs until 4 October 2026.
